Structural Scale Stone

Large Sandstone Blocks Sydney

When a wall needs real mass — structural retaining, civil batters, creek stabilisation, commercial landscaping — you need stone at excavator scale. Direct from the Glenorie quarry we supply large rough squared blocks at 2–3 man size, substantial sandstone billets, and select boulders shaped for structured walling, all sold by the tonne with delivery across Sydney.

The Large-Format Range

Large rough squared blocks have been through production, so they generally carry at least one sawn side — a flat bed that speeds machine placement and gives walls a structured (but not oversized) finish. Use them on their own, or blend with standard one-man rough squared blocks to vary the coursing.

Sandstone billets are the heavyweights: large-format pieces for substantial retaining walls and architectural features where visual mass matters. Select boulders are the budget path to big walls — more shaped than regular boulders for easier, tighter placement, but cheaper than fully sawn stock.

Placement and Site Planning

Two-to-three-man blocks and billets are machine-placed — a 5-tonne excavator with a grab handles most residential structural walls; larger civil work runs bigger iron. Plan crane truck access for delivery, and confirm bearing: big stone wants a compacted or engineered base. Our team regularly supplies civil contractors and can sequence multi-load deliveries to match your build program.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy are large sandstone blocks?

Sandstone weighs roughly 2.2–2.4 tonnes per cubic metre. A "2–3 man" block typically runs 100–300kg, while billets and large boulders can exceed a tonne each — machine placement is essential.

What machinery do I need to place large sandstone blocks?

A 3–5 tonne excavator with a rock grab handles most 2–3 man blocks; billets and large boulders may need 8 tonnes or more. If in doubt, tell us your wall size and machine and we’ll advise the right stone class.

Are large blocks cheaper per tonne than palletised blocks?

Generally yes — large rough squared blocks and select boulders carry less processing, so cost per tonne of wall is lower than fully finished stone. The trade-off is machine placement instead of hand laying.

Can you supply large blocks for civil projects?

Yes — the quarry supplies civil and commercial contractors regularly, with multi-load deliveries sequenced to program, MSDS documentation available and consistent supply from an operating quarry face.
