Feature & Retaining Rock

Sandstone Boulders Sydney

Boulders do the landscaping work machines and mortar can’t fake: mass, permanence and the sense that the garden grew around the stone. Our sandstone boulders come straight off the Glenorie quarry in every size — from 75–150mm gabion spalls through 1–2 man rocks and bobcat rock to large feature boulders — in the full Sydney colour range.

For walling on a budget, select boulders are the smart grade: more shaped than regular boulders for easier, tighter placement, but more economical than excavator-sawn blocks.

Grades and Sizes

Regular boulders are fully natural — the go-to for bushland gardens, creek beds, feature rocks and informal retaining. "1–2 man" rocks (liftable by one or two people) suit hand-built edges and garden features; bobcat rock is the machine-placed middle class; and large feature boulders anchor entries and pool landscapes.

Select boulders are chosen and shaped for structured walling — flatter beds and faces that stack tighter, making them the perfect option for large-scale walls on a budget. And at the small end, gabion spalls (75–150mm) fill wire baskets, dry creek beds and drainage zones.

Boulder Walls and Placement

A boulder retaining wall is a gravity structure: big stones, battered back into the slope, each bearing on the ones below. Excavator placement with a rock grab is standard; expect roughly 1.5–2 tonnes of boulder per square metre of wall face depending on size class. Boulder walls want more horizontal room than block walls, and they repay it with the most natural finish retaining can have.

For feature placement, odd numbers read best — a three-boulder group with varied sizes, buried a third deep so they sit in the land rather than on it.
