Spalls for Baskets
Gabion Rocks Sydney
Gabion walls live or die by the rock inside the wire — and sandstone spalls are the prettiest fill in Sydney. Our gabion spalls are small sandstone boulders screened to 75–150mm, sized to stay put in standard mesh, in the quarry’s famous colour spread of whites, yellows, browns, oranges and purples that turns a wire basket into a feature wall.
They’re also a civil workhorse: rip-rap, under-armour, drainage zones, dry creek beds and property development works all draw on the same screened product.
Why Sandstone in Gabions
Most gabion fill is grey quarry ballast; sandstone spalls make the wall the point. The mixed colour range reads warm and natural against timber, steel and rendered surfaces — which is why rustic gabion walling has become a signature of contemporary Australian garden design. Screened 75–150mm sizing means pieces lock together above the mesh apertures with a consistent face texture.
Hand-placing the visible faces (stack the outer skin like drystone, tip-fill the core) gives the best finish for the least labour — a trick worth the extra hour per basket.
Quantities and Civil Uses
A standard 2m × 1m × 0.5m basket takes approximately 1.5 tonnes of spall; allow around 1.6–1.8 tonnes per cubic metre of basket volume. Beyond baskets, spalls are the right rock for rip-rap and scour protection, under-armour beneath larger rock layers, drainage blankets behind retaining walls, and dry creek beds in bushland-style gardens.

Frequently Asked Questions
What rock is best for gabion baskets?
Hard, weather-resistant stone sized larger than the mesh aperture — typically 75–150mm. Sandstone spalls meet the spec and add the colour range that makes gabion walls a design feature rather than civil infrastructure.
How much rock fills a gabion basket?
Approximately 1.5 tonnes for a standard 2m × 1m × 0.5m basket, or 1.6–1.8 tonnes per cubic metre of basket. We can calculate tonnage from your basket schedule in a free quote.
Are sandstone gabion rocks strong enough?
Yes — spalls come off the same quarry faces as our building stone, and gabions are a low-stress application: the wire carries the shape, the stone provides mass and drainage. Sydney civil projects use these spalls for rip-rap and under-armour.
Do you deliver gabion rock in bulk?
Yes — tipper delivery by the tonne across Sydney, with multi-load sequencing for civil quantities. Collection from the Glenorie quarry also works for trailer-scale jobs.
