Crushed Sandstone Sydney

Crushed sandstone is the workhorse nobody photographs: under slabs, under driveways, under horse arenas and native garden paths across Sydney. Ours is crushed on site at the Glenorie quarry in two grades — 75mm minus and 150mm minus — plus a 20mm-minus screened fill sand produced on the quarry’s screener plant, used by concreters, electricians, plumbers and landscapers alike.

Grades and What They’re For

150mm minus is the bulk filler — deep fill under slabs, farm tracks and platform building where you want big material compacting into a stable mass. 75mm minus is the finer all-rounder: sub-base for driveways and paving, arena construction, and free-draining backfill behind retaining walls.

The 20mm-minus fill sand is the trench and bedding product — pipe bedding for plumbers and electricians, under-slab sand blinding, and paver bedding. All three come off the same stone as our paving and blocks, so they’re clean natural sandstone with no demolition contaminants.

The Native Garden Secret

Crushed sandstone is the best-kept secret of Sydney native landscaping. It drains the way our bushland soils drain, so natives that sulk in clay thrive in it; it compacts into natural-looking paths that blend with bushland settings; and its colour is literally the local landscape. Use 75mm minus compacted for paths, and blend fines into planting beds for banksias, grevilleas and westringias.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is crushed sandstone used for?

Fill under slabs and arenas, driveway and paving sub-base, free-draining retaining wall backfill, and natural-looking bushland paths. The 20mm-minus fill sand covers pipe bedding and blinding work.

What sizes does crushed sandstone come in?

Two grades from the quarry: 75mm minus and 150mm minus, plus a 20mm-minus screened fill sand. Gabion spalls (75–150mm) cover the drainage-rock niche between them.

Is crushed sandstone good for driveways?

Yes — 75mm minus compacts into an excellent free-draining driveway base, and it’s the natural choice under sandstone paving so base and surface behave the same way. For rural driveways it also serves as the finished surface.

How much crushed sandstone do I need?

Allow roughly 2 tonnes per cubic metre compacted. For a base, multiply area × depth (e.g. 50m² × 0.15m = 7.5m³ ≈ 15 tonnes). Send your dimensions and we’ll quote tonnage and delivery.

Is crushed sandstone the same as road base?

It performs a similar role but is cleaner: pure crushed quarry sandstone rather than recycled mixed rubble, with no brick, concrete or asphalt content — which matters for native gardens, arenas and anywhere appearance counts.
