Sandstone Driveway Pavers Sydney
A sandstone driveway makes an entrance. The key is thickness: where 50mm stone is fine for foot traffic, driveways need 75mm or 100mm pavers over a properly engineered base. We stock driveway-grade sandstone in three styles — sawn flagging, sawn modular paving and traditional track handsplit flagging — all quarried and cut at Glenorie, plus the crushed sandstone road base to go underneath.
Driveway-Grade Stone: 75mm and 100mm
Our sawn flagging and sawn modular paving are both stocked in 75mm and 100mm thicknesses specifically for vehicle areas. For a heritage or rustic driveway, track handsplit flagging runs 75–100mm thick with the traditional split face — its extra bedwidth also makes it superb for deep edging along the drive.
One quarry, one colour palette: your driveway, front path and letterbox surround can all come out of the same stone so the whole frontage reads as a single design.
Build-Up: What Goes Under a Sandstone Driveway
Driveway paving is only as good as its base. Typical residential build-up is 150mm of compacted road base (or a reinforced concrete slab for clay soils and steep sites), a mortar or flowable screed bed, then the 75–100mm stone. We supply crushed sandstone in 75mm-minus and 150mm-minus grades — an excellent, free-draining base material that comes off the same quarry, and a 20mm-minus fill sand for bedding and services.
Ask us for a combined quote on pavers plus base material; buying both from the quarry usually saves a second delivery fee.

How thick do sandstone pavers need to be for a driveway?
Use 75mm minimum for cars on a well-compacted base, and 100mm for heavier vehicles, steep drives or where the base is less certain. Never use 50mm paving stone for vehicles.
Will cars crack sandstone driveway pavers?
Not when the correct thickness is laid over a proper base. Sandstone at 75–100mm on 150mm of compacted road base (or a concrete slab) handles residential vehicle loads comfortably — Sydney has sandstone carriageways well over a century old.
What base should I use under a sandstone driveway?
A minimum 150mm compacted road base for typical soils, or a reinforced concrete slab over reactive clay or on steep grades. Our 75mm-minus and 150mm-minus crushed sandstone is a free-draining base that matches the stone above it.
Does a sandstone driveway stain from tyres and oil?
Seal driveway stone with a penetrating sealer to resist oil and tyre marks. Spot-clean spills promptly with a pH-neutral degreaser. Mixed-colour pallets also disguise everyday marks better than uniform pale stone.
