Sawn Flagging
Sandstone Crazy Paving Sydney
Crazy paving is back — and natural sandstone does it better than anything else. Our sawn flagging is quarried and diamond-sawn at Glenorie in Sydney’s Hills District, supplied in mixed-colour pallets of irregular pieces that fit together like a natural mosaic. Sawn edges keep joints tight and laying fast, while the random shapes give every courtyard, path and pool surround a one-of-a-kind finish.
Stocked in 50mm, 75mm and 100mm thicknesses from $85 per square metre, it is one of the most versatile and best-value ways to get real Australian sandstone underfoot.
What Is Sawn Flagging?
Sawn flagging is the modern form of crazy paving: naturally irregular sandstone pieces with clean diamond-sawn edges and a consistent thickness. The sawn edge is what separates it from rough broken flagstone — pieces butt together neatly, mortar joints stay even, and the finished surface is flat enough for dining settings and bare feet.
Each pallet is quarry-run mixed colour, blending marbled whites, yellows, browns and the occasional purple band. Laid across a courtyard, the effect is warm and organic — no two floors are ever the same.
Choosing a Thickness
50mm is the standard for patios, courtyards and paths laid on a compacted road-base and mortar bed. Step up to 75mm for heavily used areas or slightly uneven bases, and 100mm where vehicles cross — driveways, carriageway crossings and shared driveways all call for the thicker stock.
If you prefer the fully traditional split-face look rather than a sawn surface, our handsplit flagging is cut the old way and suits heritage settings — see the handsplit flagging page for regular, thin and track grades.
Laying Crazy Paving
Crazy paving is laid on a 25–40mm mortar bed over compacted road base, with pieces arranged dry first to minimise cutting. Joints of 10–20mm are typical and can be mortared flush or slightly recessed. Order roughly 10% extra to allow for trimming and selection — our team can calculate pallet quantities from your square meterage.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between crazy paving and sawn flagging?
They are the same product — sawn flagging is the trade name for crazy paving made of irregular sandstone pieces with diamond-sawn edges and consistent thickness. The sawn edges make laying faster and joints neater than broken flagstone.
How much does sandstone crazy paving cost in Sydney?
Our sawn flagging starts at $85/m² ex-quarry for 50mm thick mixed-colour pallets. 75mm and 100mm grades and delivered prices are quoted per job — request a free quote with your area and suburb.
How much extra crazy paving should I order?
Allow about 10% over your measured area for trimming, selection and breakage. For complex shapes with lots of edges, allow 15%.
Can crazy paving be used around a pool?
Yes — sandstone crazy paving is a classic Sydney pool surround. The stone is naturally slip-resistant and stays cool underfoot, and the irregular pattern hides splashes and leaf litter well.
What do I lay crazy paving on?
A compacted road-base sub-base with a 25–40mm mortar bed is standard for 50mm flagging. For driveways, use the 100mm grade over a reinforced concrete slab or engineered base.
