A sandstone house is the Sydney dream — and with brick-format blocks it’s built the same way as a brick home. Our 110mm-bedwidth blocks lay as a veneer skin on standard strip footings with conventional ties, which means any builder who can lay brick veneer can deliver a full sandstone façade. The stone comes off the Glenorie quarry, cut to coursing heights from 100mm to 300mm.
Rockfaced blocks add value to your home and are used for everything up to complete houses — the traditional finish that has defined the Hills District, North Shore and heritage Sydney for over a century.
How a Sandstone Veneer Home Works
Structurally it’s brick veneer: a timber or steel frame carries the roof, and the 110mm sandstone skin carries itself, tied back to the frame. Footings, cavity, ties, weepholes — all standard practice, priced by any residential builder. The difference is entirely in the face: solid natural stone with colour through the full body, deep shadow lines and a texture that renders and claddings imitate but never match.
Course heights are your design lever. Uniform 150mm coursing reads neat and domestic; mixed 100–250mm ashlar coursing reads grand and colonial; 300mm courses read monumental. The quarry cuts all of them from the same stock.
Details That Finish a Stone Home
The quarry’s stonemasons cut the details that make a sandstone house sing: window sills and heads, quoins, string courses, bullnosed steps, pier caps and letterboxes — all from the same stone as the walls, so colour and grain carry through. Thin handsplit flagging (30–50mm) can clad existing masonry where you’re renovating rather than building new.
