The split log is the format that brought sandstone retaining back to suburban Sydney. Traditional quarry logs were huge — beautiful, but they needed a 20-tonne excavator and a wide gate. Split logs keep the solid-stone construction at approximately 300x300mm, a size that small machinery places and tight sites accommodate, with sawn beds that make coursing genuinely easy.
Split vs Traditional Logs
Traditional sandstone logs run 500mm+ in section and half a tonne or more per piece; split logs deliver the same wall language — long stone courses, rough face, monumental feel — at roughly a quarter of the weight per metre. That difference cascades through a project: smaller machine hire, narrower access, less footing excavation, easier handling, lower freight.
Strength isn’t compromised. It’s the same Glenorie stone, and a coursed 300mm wall is structurally excellent to the ~1m garden-wall heights where logs are the right tool.
Design Details
The rough split face gives walls shadow and character; the sawn beds keep courses shadow-tight. Run logs in stretcher bond with staggered joints, return corners with overlapped ends, and finish wall tops flush or with a capping course. In planting schemes, the 300mm module aligns beautifully with step risers (one log) and seat heights (a course and a half).
